The Wonders of Antarctica

In this learning challenge we will investigate questions like ‘Where is Antarctica? What is it like? Why is Antarctica so cold? Who lives there and why? Who are the greatest explorers of this continent? How is the future of Antarctica in danger today? and What would life be like if there was another Ice Age?
In English we will read the story of ‘The Emperor’s Egg’ to help us recognise new words and to inspire our imagination of Antarctica. Can you imagine spending the winter outdoors in Antarctica without anything at all to eat? That's just what the male Emperor penguin does. While his mate is off swimming in the ocean and catching loads of fish, he stands around in the freezing cold with an egg on his feet for two whole months, keeping it warm and waiting for it to hatch. We will use the book to develop our creative writing skills through writing short accounts, stories and poems to describe what life is like in Antarctica.
In Maths we will learn how to recognise, measure and record temperature using positive and negative numbers. We will learn how to use lists, charts and simple graphs and the correct mathematical words to show what we have found out about life in Antarctica. Throughout this learning challenge we will also develop our mathematical skills of geometry, measurement, arithmetic and reasoning.
In Science we will discover how humans and some animals adapt to survive in Antarctica and find out how their off springs mature into adults. We will also take a close look at the life cycle of seahorses and penguins and the habitats they live in. As scientists we will group Antarctica’s living things according to their similarities and differences and explain our findings scientifically.
In History we will look at some famous Arctic explorers and look at their achievements and in Design and technology, we will prepare and cook a typical arctic meal that an explorer might enjoy. While in Geography we will develop our locational knowledge by using globes, maps and plans to trace their journeys and to see if Antarctica is really shrinking. In addition, we will consider the geographical differences between the UK and this non-European continent.
In Art we will look at some famous Antarctic paintings to help us paint our own Antarctic adventure and to make a 3D sculpture of an arctic scene and/ or a sculpture of a penguin. While in Music, we will create and select sounds that reflect life in Antarctica. Finally, in Computing we will use technology to record a simple soundscape of the continent.
